Four Chaplains Day

Friday, February 3 - 10:00 AM

Four Chaplains Day honors Army chaplains who gave up their lives to save soldiers when their troop ship sank in World War II.

Berea's Veterans Outreach Office will conduct a service 10-11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 3 in Lindsay-Crossman Chapel on the campus of Baldwin-Wallace University. The service will include the Empty Chair Ceremony led by area clergy. A luncheon will follow.

Please RSVP by Jan. 23 to Veterans Outreach coordinator Chaplain Willie Springer, wspringer@cityofberea.org or (440) 973-4567.

On Feb. 3, 1943, the American troop ship Dorchester was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in the North Atlantic. The four chaplains on board - two Protestant, one Catholic and one Jewish - gave their life vests to soldiers. The four clergy held hands and prayed together as the ship sank.

Lindsay-Crossman Chapel is at 56 Seminary St.
