On Feb. 3, 1943, the American troop ship Dorchester was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in the North Atlantic. The four chaplains on board - two Protestant, one Catholic and one Jewish - gave their life vests to soldiers. The four clergy held hands and prayed together as the ship sank.
Lindsay-Crossman Chapel is at 56 Seminary St.
