The Evening’s Program

                                     “Salmon P. Chase: The Ambitious Ohioan”

Salmon Portland Chase, known for his courtroom advocacy for escaped slaves before the war, agreed to serve as Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury after falling short of securing the Republican presidential nomination in 1860.  He played a key role in funding the U.S. war effort but clashed repeatedly with Lincoln, who finally accepted his fourth offer - or was it a threat? - to resign.  Even after being appointed to the Supreme Court, Chase never gave up his White House ambitions.

The December 2023 meeting of the Cleveland Civil War Roundtable will take place on December 13^th, 2023 beginning at 6:00 p.m. This will be an in-person meeting. The speaker will be Judge William Vodrey, and the title of his presentation is "Salmon P. Chase: The Ambitious Ohioan." Judge Vodrey is a past president of the Cleveland Civil War Roundtable and a member of American Battlefield Trust and Blue and Gray Education Society.  He is a member of our Speaker Bureau and has presented at many roundtables and other groups in our area.

Reservations should be made by sending an email to the Roundtable’s reservation email account (ccwrtreserve@gmail.com).

When making a reservation, please include your name and the number and names of any guests.  We will have a PRIME RIB BUFFET this month to celebrate the holidays (vegetarian options available on the buffet).  If a reservation needs to be canceled, it must be canceled no later than December 12^th, 2023.  The cost of dinner is $35 per person.  Other details can be found on the Reservations page by visiting this link.
